NYPS Certificate in Vascular Interpretation (CVI-NYPS)

An Educational Pathway Supporting Physician Competency in Diagnostic Vascular Ultrasound Interpretation

Overview

The New York Physician Society (NYPS) is proud to offer a structured, physician-designed educational pathway for diagnostic vascular interpretation. The Certificate in Vascular Interpretation (CVI-NYPS) is intended for physicians who seek to gain documented training and competency in vascular ultrasound interpretation while preparing for formal board certification such as the RPVI (Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation).

This pathway is designed by and for physicians — with flexibility for integration into diverse outpatient practices, including Pain Management, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Surgery.

Program Goals

  • Offer physicians a formal certificate of training in vascular interpretation

  • Provide a recognized pathway to demonstrate compliance with CMS expectations under Medicare Part B

  • Support documentation for facility privileging, payer audits, and IAC accreditation

  • Serve as a bridge to RPVI certification or similar credentialing programs

Who This Program Is For

  • Physicians interpreting vascular ultrasound in office-based or ASC settings

  • Practice owners who wish to bill for CPT 93970–93971, 93925–93926, or similar studies

  • Those seeking an alternative to hospital-based credentialing pathways

  • Physicians looking to gain competence while working toward RPVI

Curriculum Includes

  • 20+ hours of AMA PRA Category 1™ CME covering:

    • Carotid duplex interpretation

    • Lower extremity arterial & venous duplex

    • ABI/PVR techniques

    • Imaging artifacts and waveform analysis

    • Compliance with IAC/AIUM standards

  • Case Log Documentation

    • Physicians will interpret 50–100 vascular studies with faculty supervision

  • Live virtual workshops (or self-paced options)

  • Final Assessment & Certificate of Completion

Alignment with CMS Requirements

The NYPS Certificate curriculum is structured to align with CMS supervision and reimbursement standards, including:

  • Training consistent with CMS’s Interpretive Guidelines for Diagnostic Testing

  • Support for local Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) requirements related to ultrasound interpretation

  • Recognition of structured CME and case log documentation as a valid demonstration of physician competency for facility audits and payer inquiries

Note: The CVI-NYPS does not replace the RPVI credential issued by APCA. However, it provides an educational foundation that supports clinical compliance and legal defensibility in both in-network and out-of-network billing environments.

Legal Disclaimer

The Certificate in Vascular Interpretation (CVI-NYPS) is an educational and competency-building certificate issued by the New York Physician Society, a private professional organization. This certificate is not equivalent to or a substitute for board certification from APCA, ABR, ABIM, ABS, or other medical specialty boards.

Possession of this certificate does not guarantee eligibility to bill for diagnostic vascular interpretation under all payors, nor does it override credentialing requirements of third-party insurers, Medicare contractors, or hospital privileging authorities.

Each participant is responsible for understanding the scope of practice permitted under their medical license, and for complying with local, state, and federal laws. NYPS does not guarantee reimbursement or privileging upon completion of this program and assumes no liability for the use or interpretation of this credential by any third-party entity.

Credentialing Methodology & Peer Review Standards

The NYPS Certificate in Vascular Interpretation (CVI-NYPS) and the Board Certified Physician Life Care Planner (BC-PLCP) are both conferred following a structured, physician-led peer review process.

All candidates — including the founding cohort — must submit:

  • A documented case log of relevant diagnostic or medico-legal experience

  • Supporting documentation (e.g., interpretation reports, life care plans, narratives)

  • A completed credentialing application with signed attestations

Submitted materials are reviewed by two independent Credentialing Board Members, using a standardized rubric evaluating:

  • Case complexity and appropriateness

  • Quality and clarity of documentation

  • Consistency with clinical guidelines and real-world practice

This peer review process is:

  • Blinded and cross-specialty when appropriate

  • Archived for 7 years in accordance with audit defense standards

  • Designed to mirror hospital credentialing and CMS supervision requirements for diagnostic interpretation

CMS Compliance Note:
Under Medicare Part B regulations, physicians interpreting diagnostic tests (e.g., vascular ultrasound, functional evaluations) must demonstrate:

Formal training and documented experience

Participation in ongoing education or credentialing

Peer-reviewed oversight when not board-certified by ABMS-recognized bodies

The NYPS peer review process satisfies these elements by documenting physician competency in a structured, repeatable, and multidisciplinary fashion.

Founding Board & Initial Cohort of Certified Physicians

The following physicians represent the founding Credentialing Advisory Panel of the New York Physician Society and comprise the initial certified cohort for the:

  • Certificate in Vascular Interpretation (CVI-NYPS)

  • Board Certified Physician Life Care Planner (BC-PLCP)

Each member submitted their case logs for peer review by two fellow Board Members, following a transparent, documented, and audit-defensible process modeled after nationally recognized credentialing standards.

Each of these physicians brings decades of collective experience in clinical medicine, procedural practice, and medico-legal consultation. Their leadership ensures that both certification pathways are rigorous, relevant, and grounded in real-world clinical application.

* As Founding Board Members, we may each submit our own case logs for review by two other members of the Credentialing Advisory Panel. This step will allow us to establish the initial cohort of certified physicians under the NYPS Certificate in Vascular Interpretation and Board Certified Physician Life Care Planner programs. All reviews will be documented and stored for transparency and audit readiness.
